Posted on 21 November 2012 by editor

Premier Foods the maker of Hovis bread are closing their distribution centre in Birmingham and axing 500 jobs. Unions have described the job losses as “devastating” and have called for urgent talks with Premier’s management. Jennie Formby, Unite national officer for food and drink said “This is just another stage in the disaster story that has been Premier Foods over recent years, which has consistently struggled ever since its decision to buy Hovis in 2006.”

Premier foods recently lost a ‘low margin’ contract worth in the region of £75 million to supply a supermarket to produced bread. Alarm bells at the firm have been ringing for sometime as well-known brands that have been sold have included ‘Branston Pickles and Sauces, Robertson’s jam and Sarson’s vinegar’. It is understand that creditors gave the firm extra time to repay its debts.
