The shutter closes on Jessops stores in Birmingham

Posted on 11 January 2013 by editor

Jessops the high street camera retailer has closed all of its 187 stores resulting in 1300 job losses. The retailer earlier in the week appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as administrators, after it ran into trading difficulties earlier in the week. Initially PwC indicated that some stores may close, but this evening all stores have shut for good.

Over the years there were a number of Jessops stores in Birmingham, including one in the Bull Ring. But gradually they have closed leaving just the main store adjacent to House of Fraser. The retailer has come under continued threat from manufacturers of smart phones which now contain advanced megapixel cameras, plus stiff online competition. Much of the product lines was geared at the lower end budget market, which coincided with the smart phones.

Rob Hunt, joint administrator at PwC, said it was an “extremely sad day for Jessops and its employees”. He added that the decision to shut down the business came after discussions with suppliers “around their support for ongoing trading”, which was not forthcoming.

David Vidgen owner of bigdayphotographer.co.uk a Birmingham Wedding Photographer said that the firm “did not stock products that attracted professional photographers, so was susceptible to trends and fads such as smart phones and alike. Had they focused on the professional market, then things may have been different. But with firms such as ‘Calumet’ and ‘The Flash Centre’ trading in the city, there may not have been a place for another pro photography distributor”.
